For generations, locals built terraced rice fields (tanada) on the mountain slopes, growing rice not for mass production, but to support village life. They even used warm onsen water to help start planting earlier in the cold mountain spring.

Today, many families still grow their own rice, and you can taste it in meals at local lodges & in the Sake 🍚✨

Last night marked the start of the Takenoko Matsur

Last night marked the start of the Takenoko Matsuri festival in Nozawa Onsen spanning from 20 to 29 June. 🎍🤍

This festival occurs each year to celebrate the harvest of bamboo shoots. Market stalls line the streets and sell food made with bamboo.

Tonight (21 June) the celebrations will continue and involve traditional dancing. Hope to see you there! 🎊👏🏼
