Fuji san is the highest mountain in Japan standing at 3,776 meters above sea level. The next highest is Mt Kita Dake in Yamanashi at 3,193 meters. So Mt Fuji being the highest point by almost 600m it is going to be one of the first places to see the snow in Japan. Many people may think that Mt Fuji has snow on it all year round but in the Summer months it is pretty bare and a popular time to make the climb. A friend of ours was camping just near by this past weekend for the Asagri Jam Music Festival and got this great snap of Mt Fuji putting on probably her first Winter coat for the […]

Terminal 3 Narita Airport heading to Nozawa Onsen
The new Terminal 3 Low Cost Carrier terminal at Narita airport opened in April this year. Jetstar, Vanilla Air and a few other airlines use the terminal so many coming from Australia to ski this coming winter will probably get to check it out. It was built at half the price of a normal terminal and given a bit of a running track theme in line with the 2020 Olympics being hosted in Tokyo. I have been thru a few times and found it all worked pretty well. Only major downside is it is about 500m walk to Terminal 2 where the train leaves from and you need to go to take the Snow Shuttle up to Nozawa which you […]
Madarao Resort a great day trip from Nozawa Onsen
Madarao Nozawa Onsen We have posted a few Summer activities going on in our neighbouring resort Madarao about time we put up a winter shot. Madarao is located just across the Chikuma river and you can see it from the upper slopes of Nozawa. The resort was very popular with students mainly in the early 90s and used to be completely packed. Like many resorts in Japan it got quiet pretty quickly after the boom times. Aki san and the team over there have been working hard on putting it back on the map and it is becoming popular again. They have been concentrating on their powder game with 60% of courses ungroomed. There are some great tree runs and […]

More Europeans are learning to love Nozawa
We had a couple of Dutch girls come out of the Dutch mountains last season and sample the Vitamin P of Japan. They scored on the powder front in Nozawa and did not want to leave. Like many people that visit Nozawa they fall in love with the snow but more so fall in love with the Village, Food, Onsens and friendly locals. Here are a few photos of their stay, may help with your decision on whether to book for this coming season…
Working Life in Nozawa Onsen
We had a lot of great staff last season in Nozawa and would like to say a big thank you to all of them. Think we need to make a special mention of our rookie of the year Nashimoto san. He joined our team at the spritely age of 70 and was a real asset to the team. In a season full of huge snow dumps he could shovel snow better than guys well less than half his age! We have been friends with Nashimoto san for 25 years now, when he was my old boss at the Nozawa Ski Patrol. He worked for the ski patrol for 38 years, a few of the later ones on a snowboard! He […]

Autumn Slow Magazine & Nozawa Onsen
It was a pleasure having Tim Baker a well known author of the Gold Coast visit us last season. Check out his latest write up ‘Slow Snow’ in Autumn Slow Magazine about his holidaying experience in our traditional Japanese village. Thanks Tim, we love this one!
Otsukaresamadeshita. Guess we better do a wrap up for the season that was in Nozawa.
The Ski lifts at Nozawa Onsen Officially closed on May the 6th with the end of the Golden Week Holiday. They are still running but only to take up racers doing some spring training. We had a 135cm base on the last day so still some fun spring skiing to be had if you strap on some skins and enjoy your back country touring. Has been another amazing season in Nozawa with yet again a crazy amount of snow. Reaching a peak of 470cm Base up top around mid February. We started with a bang in mid December when we got around 300cm of snow in just 4 days! It was ridiculous; I don’t ever remember that much snow so […]
