Sushi Nozawa Onsen Japan
Sushi Nozawa Onsen Japan Masa san has been working in Nozawa for a few years now and is the main Sushi maker for the Mt Dock Gondola Cafe located just below the main Nagasaka Gondola in Nozawa, Here are a few details for you on the art of Sushi Making. In the Western world, rolled sushi is generically called ‘sushi roll’. But in Japan, they have individual names depending on the types of sushi rolls. Firstly, there are different names based on the thickness of the roll. Futomaki (太巻き) – thick (太) rolls (巻き) which are about 5cm in diameter and served as a long stick (about 10cm long) or sliced into 2.5cm thick pieces. Hosomaki (細巻き) – thin (細) […]
Farming Nozawa Onsen Japan
Farming Nozawa Onsen Japan The locals are getting busy around the village preparing the fields for farming over the green season. Next to tourism, farming is probably the biggest industry in Nozawa Onsen. In Summer every little plot of dirt is farmed in some way. Rice is the biggest crop and it is delicious, you have probably eaten it in one of the restaurants or drunk it in the local Sake. However nearly anything grows in the nutrient rich soil here and we have an abundance of flowing water. So we have a great variety of fresh produce to enjoy. For all those at home doing your own little bit of hobby farming hope it is going well. Cold day […]

New Gondola Nozawa Onsen
New Gondola Nozawa Onsen Ohayou Gozaimasu from the last day of the Ski Season in Nozawa Today the lifts will close for the 2020 season in Nozawa and even bigger it will be the last day of the current Nagasaka Gondola. The Nagasaka Gondola first opened in 1990 so it has been an amazing 30 years of operation. It was a real game changer here at the time replacing a 4 seater lift with a 12 person high speed Gondola to get to the top. I was lucky enough to ride it in the early days and hope to get up there today for the final ride. A little fun fact when Nagasaka first opened not all of […]

Snow Fall April Japan
Snow Fall April Japan Spring time Snow in Japan 🇯🇵 Not the conditions we expect for mid April but not complaining. The resort reporting 20cm of fresh overnight and base now back up to 200cm. Life back in the snow globe. Took a little trip and a hike to make the most of the powder. Headed to nearby Shiga Kogen, some resorts there were already closed for the season and some had closed due to the strong winds with this winter blizzard style storm. So we decided to do some hiking to make the most of this amazing dump and were rewarded with some mid Winter like conditions Snow Fall April Japan Late yesterday afternoon the skies cleared and the snow settled […]
Cherry Blossoms Nozawa Japan
Cherry Blossoms Nozawa Japan Cherry Blossoms starting to bloom Even though there is still snow up top on the slopes down in the valleys Spring is starting to blossom. The beautiful Cherry Blossoms or Sakura as they are called in Japanese are starting to come out in many areas. Nearby Takada Castle and park in Joetsu close to the Japanese Sea is reaching full bloom now and is an amazing place to see this natural wonder. Won’t be long until Iiyama and even Nozawa start to see the gorgeous white petals grace the landscape. The springtime bloom is an amazing spectacle but remarkably brief; after only two weeks, they drop to the ground a bit like snow and wither into […]

Global Cooling Japan 2021
Global Cooling Japan 2021 Global Cooling? Definite winters day up top at Yamabiko yesterday. The snow was dumping down all day and nice and cold. We ended up with about 20cm of fresh snow for the day. Sun starting to pop it’s head out now, temps remaining cool, no wind and fresh snow on the ground should make for a beautiful day. What happened to Spring? Could one good thing be coming out of the current situation? As industry grinds to a halt and we’re not moving around much, there’s less pollution being expelled into the air around the globe. Check out these satellite images https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/mar/23/coronavirus-pandemic-leading-to-huge-drop-in-air-pollution The forecast is expecting 30cm plus of snow up top here on Monday too, […]
