Summer Activities Nozawa Onsen
Summer Activities Nozawa Onsen
When most people think of Nozawa Onsen, they imagine deep powder snow, bustling ski lifts, and cozy hot spring retreats. But those who venture here in the summertime discover a completely different side of this charming village, one painted in lush greens, lively festivals, and tranquil mountain lakes. Here’s a glimpse of what makes Nozawa Onsen a must-visit destination in Japan’s green season.
1. Immerse Yourself in Tradition at the Nozawa Onsen Bamboo Festival
While Nozawa Onsen’s Dosojin Fire Festival in January is world-renowned, summer brings its own vibrant celebration, the Nozawa Onsen Bamboo Festival (Take Matsuri). In 2025 this festival is held between 20 to 29 June. This centuries-old event is a celebration of protection and prosperity, deeply rooted in the village’s Shinto traditions.
The festival transforms the village streets into a buzzing hub of laughter, color, and competition. The main event? Locals and visitors alike parade giant bamboo pole, some stretching over 20 meters. Groups engage in friendly battles of strength and teamwork, maneuvering the massive bamboo structures in a spirited display of unity and festivity.
As night falls, traditional music echoes through the valley, food stalls light up the streets, and fireworks illuminate the sky. It’s not just a festival, it is a full immersion into Nozawa’s living history.

2. Lakeside Escapes: Relax and Rejuvenate at Lake Hokuryu
Just a short drive from the village lies the serene Lake Hokuryu. Nestled among rolling green hills, this peaceful lake is a local favorite for summer picnics, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding. On calm days, the still waters mirror the surrounding forests, creating an almost dreamlike scene.
For the adventurous, hiking trails around the lake offer gentle climbs with rewarding panoramic views of Nagano’s verdant landscapes. After a walk, find a shady spot under a tree, grab a local bento lunch, and simply breathe in the crisp mountain air.
In July and August, you might even catch small local events or markets by the lakeside, adding a festive flavor to your tranquil visit.
3. Day Trip to Lake Nojiri: Adventure Awaits
For those looking for a bit more excitement, Lake Nojiri (Nojiriko), about a 40-minute drive from Nozawa, is a hub of summer adventure. Much larger than Hokuryu, Nojiri offers everything from wakeboarding and water skiing to leisurely swan boat rides.
Surrounded by forested hills, the lake also has several lakeside cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy fresh-caught fish or Nagano’s famous soba noodles. For an unforgettable experience, rent a kayak and paddle out at sunset, when the sky blushes pink and the mountains stand as dark silhouettes on the horizon.

4. Hiking, Biking, and Onsen Bliss
Beyond lakes and festivals, summer in Nozawa Onsen offers numerous trails weaving through beech forests and wildflower meadows. Rent a mountain bike and explore quiet mountain paths or hike up to the stunning Keen’s View for sweeping views of the valley.
And of course, no matter how active your day has been, nothing beats soaking in one of the village’s 13 free public hot springs (soto-yu) afterward. Surrounded by old wooden bathhouses and the aroma of hinoki (Japanese cypress), it’s a quintessential Nozawa experience.
