Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort’s summer operation is open only until Sunday, 26 October — just four more days to enjoy the view from the gondola and the great food at Kitchen Seavus at Uenotaira.

The countdown to winter has begun in Nozawa Onsen! Early forecasts are pointing to another cold and snowy season ahead, with long-range models suggesting slightly above-average snowfall and below-average temperatures from December through February. Perfect conditions for deep powder days and that classic Nozawa magic.

After a warm autumn, the chill is already setting in across Nagano, and locals are getting their skis waxed and snow shovels ready. The first snowfalls are expected on the upper slopes of Mt. Kenashi around late November, with the official resort opening planned for the last weekend of November (snow permitting). We may even see a sneaky fall next week. Part of Hokkaido are already showing some dustings of early snow.

冬のカウントダウンが始まりました！ 今年の野沢温泉も、寒くて雪の多いシーズンになりそうです。長期予報によると、12月から2月にかけては平年より低めの気温とやや多めの降雪が見込まれています。パウダースノーを楽しむには最高の条件ですね。

秋の暖かさも少しずつ和らぎ、長野の山々では冬の気配が漂い始めています。毛無山の上部では11月下旬ごろに初雪が期待され、**スキー場のオープンは12月上旬（積雪状況による）**を予定しています。

ゲレンデで今シーズン最初の滑りを楽しむのも良し、温泉に浸かりながら雪を眺めるのも良し。野沢の冬は、今年もきっと特別な時間を届けてくれるでしょう。

The Autumn Harvest Festival is now on in Nozawa Onsen Village.

🏮The event takes place in the back alley behind Kawahara-yu, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

🍺Local restaurants have set up stalls serving delicious seasonal dishes. You can enjoy your food at the outdoor seating set up along the alley, under the soft glow of lanterns.

Some nearby bars also allow you to bring in the food you’ve purchased at the festival.

The Autumn Harvest Festival is only on this weekend.
There’s a chance of a little rain, but we hope you’ll come and enjoy the cosy autumn vibes in Nozawa Onsen!

First Snow of the Season Hits Japan ❄️
The first blankets of snow have arrived in Japan! A few of the mountain ranges up in northern Hokkaido have seen their peaks turn white over the past few days — always a beautiful and exciting sight. As is often the case, Asahidake and Kurodake were the first to be dusted. These photos were all taken at Asahidake yesterday, with even more snow expected in just over a week. @asahidakengo

No signs of snow in Nozawa yet, but we’re definitely reaching for the blankets at night now — always a pleasant cool change after the extreme heat of summer. Daytimes remain warm and perfect for hiking or cycling.
The weather bureau says it should stay mild a little longer before temperatures drop suddenly. Both they and the local farmers are leaning towards another big snow season ahead.

December is predicted to bring heavy early falls, with more typical snow patterns through January and beyond. But after 35 seasons in Nozawa, I know it’s a fool’s game to predict too far ahead — if anyone asks me, I always say, “I’ll tell you in April!”

ここ数日、北海道北部の山々では今シーズン初の雪が見られました。真っ白に染まった峰々はやはり美しく、ワクワクしますね。例年のように、旭岳や黒岳のあたりが一番乗りで雪化粧となりました。こちらの写真は昨日の旭岳の様子です。1週間ほどでさらに雪が増える予報も出ています。

野沢温泉ではまだ雪の気配はありませんが、夜は少し肌寒くなり、そろそろ毛布の出番です。夏の暑さが落ち着き、心地よい秋の涼しさが感じられる季節ですね。日中はまだ暖かく、ハイキングやサイクリングには最高の気候が続いています。

The lifts stay busy, the sound of boards on snow carries across the mountain, and the whole place feels full of energy.

Now in late summer, the same view is calm, green and wide open.
You can see the ridgelines and the distant villages clearly, with no crowds in sight and only the wind moving through the grass.

Before long, this quiet slope will change again.
For now, it’s a peaceful moment between seasons—but winter isn’t far, and we’ll be ready to welcome you when it returns.

This weekend on Saturday, 28 September, the Nozawa Spa Trail Race 2025 will be held right here in Nozawa Onsen.

The 13km course starts from the village, past the peaceful Lake Hokuryu, and up through the majestic cedar-lined path to Kosuge Shrine.

It’s a scenic route where you can soak in the crisp autumn air and enjoy the beauty of nature all around you.

One of the highlights of this event is the special dog-friendly category— you can run with your dog!

The course is beginner-friendly, so you and your dog can take it at your own pace — run, walk, or even carry!
It’s all about enjoying the journey together.

After the race, be sure to stop by one of Nozawa’s public hot spring baths (soto-yu) to soak, relax, and unwind.

As the days grow shorter and the nights cooler, the village shows a different kind of beauty that can only be seen in this season.
Walking through the fields or wandering the quiet streets in the evening, you can feel how nature is gently preparing for the colder months ahead.
It’s a peaceful, reflective time of year – and also the best season for outdoor activities. Hiking, cycling, exploring the mountains, and soaking in the onsen all feel just right in the crisp, fresh air.

🍁 The Nagasaka Gondola at Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort resumed daily operations yesterday.
Every October, the mountains of Nozawa Onsen are painted with stunning autumn colours like those in the photo.

The gondola runs until Sunday, 26th October for the summer season.

It takes about 8 minutes from the base at Nagasaka Gondola Station to the summit at Uenotaira Station.
From the gondola, you can enjoy panoramic views over Nozawa Onsen Village, Kijimadaira, and Iiyama City.

Uenotaira, the summit station, is at a higher altitude and is said to be around 10°C cooler than the village.
While Uenotaira is still lush and green, the leaves on the trees are slowly starting to change colour, quietly welcoming the autumn season.

The Uenotaira Picnic Garden is full of colourful flowers and is a perfect spot for a stroll or a picnic.
There’s also a mountain bike trail, with all equipment available for hire.

For lunch or a break at the top, we recommend “Kitchen Seavus.”

🚡 長坂ゴンドラ毎日営業再開

🍁 野沢温泉スキー場　長坂ゴンドラが、昨日から毎日運行を再開しました。例年10月には、写真のような美しい紅葉を長坂ゴンドラから楽しむことができます。

ゴンドラの今季の営業は10月26日（日）までです。麓の長坂ゴンドラ駅から、山頂・上ノ平駅までは約8分。野沢温泉村の街並みはもちろん、周辺の山々や、木島平村や飯山市が見渡せます。

🌾 今の時期は、黄金色に染まった田んぼがとても美しく、秋ならではの景色を楽しめます。ゴンドラ山頂駅のある上ノ平高原は標高約1,400m、村よりも約10℃涼しいです。まだ緑が美しい上ノ平高原ですが、木々の葉も少しずつ色づき始め、景色はゆっくりと秋へと変わりつつあります。

上ノ平ピクニックガーデンでは色とりどりの花が咲き、散策やピクニックにぴったりの場所です。マウンテンバイクコースもあり、道具は全てレンタルができます。

山頂でのランチやひと休みには、キッチン・セアボスがおすすめです。
店内、又はピクニックエリアの両方を利用できます。

Autumn has already made its mark here in Nozawa Onsen.
The rice fields are now golden, ready for harvest, and the evenings have turned cool—often dropping below 20°C. Days can still reach 25°C, so you’ll feel summer sunshine in the daytime, and a refreshing chill once the sun goes down.

The change is clear in the air and the scenery. Mountains that were deep green in August are softer now, touched with early autumn colours. Soon, the leaves will start to turn, and the landscape will shift again as autumn deepens.
The sound of insects at night replaces the buzz of summer, and the clear sky brings crisp stars overhead.

野沢温泉村では、もうすっかり秋の気配が感じられます。
田んぼは黄金色に色づき、稲刈りを迎える時期となりました。夕方は20度を下回ることもあり、日中は25度前後とまだ暖かいですが、日が沈むと爽やかな涼しさを感じます。

景色や空気の変化もはっきりしています。8月に濃い緑だった山も落ち着いた緑色に変わり、これから少しずつ紅葉も始まっていきます。
夜に賑やかだった虫の声も少しずつ減り、星もより鮮明に見ることができます。

🏮Yuzawa Shine Ceremony - 湯澤神社例祭⛩️

The annual ceremony at Yuzawa Shrine in Nozawa Onsen was held again this year on 8th and 9th of September.

For two days, the village is wrapped in a ceremony atmosphere.
The sounds of Taiko(Japanese drums) and flutes echo through the streets, while Chochin提灯 (ちょうちん、Japanese lanterns) light the paths.
With performances by Tengu and Shishi the lion dancers, fireworks, and the mikoshi 神輿(みこし) procession, the entire village comes together to celebrate.

💡Japanese ceremonies are filled with prayers and gratitude — for a good harvest, for the birth and healthy growth of children, and for protection from illness and disasters.
They are also a time for the community to come together, to pass down important skills and traditions to the next generation.

🌾In Nozawa Onsen Village, two major ceremonies are held on the same dates each year: the Dōsojin Fire Ceremony on January 15th, and the Yuzawa Shrine Ceremony on September 8th and 9th.

The public hot springs, or soto-yu 外湯, are at the heart of life in Nozawa Onsen Village.

There are 13 traditional baths scattered throughout the village, each one lovingly cared for by the local community.

All are within easy walking distance and each bath has its own unique character.

The color of the water, the scent of the minerals, and even the yu-no-hana (mineral deposits) differ from one to the next.

Going from bath to bath isn’t just relaxing, it’s a journey through the rich variety of Nozawa’s natural hot springs.

The baths are open all year round, perfect after a peaceful walk in the green hills during summer or day on the slopes in winter.

They’re free to use, but you’ll find donation boxes at the entrances if you’d like to contribute to their upkeep.
If you’ve never been, it’s a brilliant local experience worth trying.

And if you’ve visited before we reckon it’ll feel just like coming home.
