Golden Week Nozawa Onsen
In spring, Nozawa Onsen offers a slightly different vibe compared to the bustling winter months. While the ski slopes close, the village transforms into a peaceful retreat with mild weather, clear skies, and a fresh green landscape. Here are a few things you might enjoy:
-
Hot Springs (Onsen): Nozawa Onsen is famous for its many public baths, which are fed by natural hot spring water. In the spring, taking a relaxing soak in one of these onsens is even more delightful when surrounded by the awakening nature.
-
Cherry Blossoms: The cherry blossoms (sakura) bloom in April, and the village’s local parks and the surrounding mountainside provide stunning views. It’s a wonderful time to experience hanami (flower viewing), a cherished Japanese tradition.
-
Hiking: With the snow starting to melt, hiking trails around Nozawa Onsen become accessible. You can enjoy scenic walks through lush forests and across the rugged landscape, with some trails leading to panoramic views of the Japanese Alps.
-
Cultural Heritage: The village maintains an old-world charm with traditional ryokan (Japanese inns), shrines, and historical sites. The Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival, which usually takes place in January, is an incredible experience if you’re ever visiting in the winter, but the historical significance and tranquil vibe are still there year-round.
-
Local Cuisine: Spring is also the season for fresh, local produce like bamboo shoots and wild vegetables. You can enjoy delicious meals featuring these seasonal ingredients at local restaurants.
