Hard to imagine just a few weeks ago we were still in the depths of winter surrounded by fresh snow everywhere. Fast forward and the weatherman is telling me that I can definitely wear a T Shirt tomorrow with up to 22 degrees expected in town! It is that in Tokyo today and they had snow there only a week ago. Still some beautiful days on the hill. The snow was fast and fun top to bottom on Monday with the cloud cover. Didn’t get up yesterday but heard was sticky in places under the sunshine. Nice and sunny again today with strong winds. Still over 3 meter base up the top.

❄️ SNOW FORECAST:

Tomorrow is going to be warm, probably the warmest day here in 6 months. However then we have a rather dramatic North West wind change sweeping in from Friday evening. Temps will drop by more than 20 degrees from tomorrow’s highs with the freezing level dropping back to sea level and some snow expected for the top.
Almost looking forward to a last blast of winter in the knowledge Spring will return in a few days time.

Still some Magic March days in Nozawa
After a few glorious days of sunshine on the hill we have some high level cloud today which is making everything feel a bit cooler. Fantastic day yesterday with sunshine and fun conditions across the resort.
The Snow Board Masters contest went well and they should leave some of the features up on Yamabiko A if want to check them out.

A big shout out to all the amazing Instructors at Nozawa Holidays Ski School. Still keeping busy with a school group from Bali in town at present. They will be open for lessons until mid April so jump on the site to book; https://www.nozawaholidays.com/lesson-registration/
They are also looking for instructors for next season
- Must have an official Ski Or Board instructor Certification
- Working Holiday Visa preferable but can look at sponsorship if good experience.
- Previous teaching experience with at least one (1) full season experience (desirable)

- A positive attitude and a willingness to be adaptable with dynamic workplace duties.

The beautiful Spring sunshine should return tomorrow and along with a bit of scattered cloud stay with us until Friday. Still showing a big drop in temps from Saturday and some snow on the forecast. Not a huge dump but maybe 10 plus cm so not bad for the end of March!

Another Pinch me type of day in Nozawa

Yesterday Nozawa delivered the goods with what some of the crew that have been here for the season calling it their best. Fresh snow, sunshine and all the elements coming together. Perfect on the groomers and some nice powder stashes on the sides. It was a public holiday yesterday so a few people around but still very quiet compared to peak season.

Plenty of sunshine again today, a cool start and will be a magic day ahead. No fresh snow to report but there will still be a bit lingering from yesterday.

The winds have shifted to South West and bringing with them some gradually warmer sunny days ahead. This pattern will hold for a week and we will finally have some consistent Spring like weather. At this stage it looks like a swift Northerly change next Saturday and with it we should see colder temps and potential for some snow fall. Getting into late March and any fresh snow we get is always a bonus. With a huge 360cm of snow base to chew through, the season will keep going until May and April can be a lot of fun and a great vibe in the village. Sun and Snow, March is the Go!

Waking up to 14cm of fresh snow across the resort and should see twice that fall again over the day. So the remaining powder hounds will be running up today and howling for the next few days in Nozawa. Could it be the last time? Never say never.
Let’s talk about yesterday, it was as good as it gets up there. Fresh snow, sunshine, very few people and crystal coated trees were magnificent. With prevailing North West winds pushing in the Siberian goodness we should see decent snow falls all day which will hopefully add up to half a meter of fresh falling on the upper slopes. If you want to be back in Winter today is your day but for me tomorrow Thursday will be special with all that snow, sun out and the winds dropping. Temps remain cold too so it will be pretty perfect.
Looking ahead and lots of spring conditions on the card for the back end of March and very much looking forward to the sunny days and mellow times on the slopes and around town. Anyway suck down your coffee and get up there for what should be some amazing days in Nozawa. Look out for the Snow Board Masters contest taking place at Yamabiko over the next few days too.

A truly unique time of year in Japan. Before the main event being the world famous Sakura Cherry Blossoms you can see the just as pretty pink Kawazu-Zakura in bloom around Tokyo and many parts of the country right now. At the same time we have 30cm plus of fresh snow and down to -10 degrees temps forecast for Nozawa on Wednesday!

Waking up to a slight dusting up high on the mountains in Nozawa the resort reporting a respectable 15cm of fresh snow. The weather guys are saying it should snow light to moderately all day and temps set to drop with a strong North West wind change on its way.

Snow today ahead of some sunshine and light winds in the morning with temps remaining cold for the next 3 days. The main snow show is still expected on Wednesday then sunshine again on Thursday which is my prediction for the best day of the week. Plenty of clear skies and spring sunshine following that with a little cold dip on Sunday where we could see some more snow. Will be very quiet on the mountain this week so enjoy the empty slopes and fresh snow. What a day yesterday in Nozawa.

We bathed in beautiful sunshine most of the day on the slopes yesterday. Sharing a beer over lunch on the Paradise slope taking in the views was sublime. The snow was great too, a bit icy up top as temps remained reasonably cool. The clock at Nagasaka was saying 1 degree above but got an ice cream headache on the way down from Yamabiko.
From Uenotaira down the snow started to soften up and Paradise was what I like to call al dente just the right mixture of spring snow a bit of slush but still a good texture and fast.

Still looks promising for all of next week on the snow front. Starting tomorrow the top half of the mountain at least should see some light falls. Temps drop into Monday and snow levels increase. Wednesday the 19th looking like the biggest day at this stage with over 30cm forecast. Thursday the 20th is a public holiday so we may see a few locals taking to the uncrowded slopes. The Holiday is Equinox day when night and day are approximately the same length and spring is officially here in Japan. All shots from yesterday.

Magic sun filled morning here with light North West winds. It is warm in the sun but temps may drop through the day. Good visibility and some fun snow conditions on offer across the whole resort. Definitely no lift lines at the moment! Guest numbers have noticeably decreased in the past few days on the slopes and about town.
With the whole resort still open it is a great time to enjoy some peaceful spring skiing in Nozawa and we may be in for a decent amount of snow next week!

Sunshine on the menu for today and tomorrow. The weekend looks a little funky with cloud on Saturday and the snow expected for the top from Sunday on. It will still be warm so we may get some rain in town. A strong northerly change is pushing in from Monday morning and temps should drop by about 10 degrees. Making way for 3 days of winter like conditions with cold temperatures and moderate snow falls. So enjoy the sun while it lasts and don’t pack away those powder planks just yet… @nozawaskirental

A whole lot of Lotte Arai

With crystal blue skies and buckets of sunshine streaming in yesterday we decided to set off and explore nearby Lotte Arai resort in bordering Nigata prefecture. Just 1 hour away from Nozawa it is a scenic drive and with a massive 6 meter snow base thought well worth a look.

Just driving up and there are some pretty impressive mountains in view. With Myoko and Hiuchi Mountains looming over the resort. Both with altitudes over 2450m above sea level they are formidable challenges. The top lift at Lotte is 1280m with an impressive 951m of vertical. This gives it some above tree line skiing and the powder bowls offer back country enthusiasts plenty of options. The on piste is beautiful but somewhat limited as it is a fairly narrow resort. Spring has finally arrived in Nozawa and the sunshine has been amazing. More on the way and warmer temperatures ahead of a Northerly change and some snow from Monday. A noticeable March change on the slope and in town now with everything getting a lot quieter. Kind of like it been able to get into most restaurants easily, uncrowded onsens and no lift lines. Spring skiing is my favourite so bring it on. Stay safe out there and have an awesome week in Nozawa.

The Chef from Villa Nozawa who has been here a few seasons now said Friday was his best day ever with around 70cm of fresh snow falling. Still snowing this morning in town, we had been expecting some sunshine so hope it comes soon! All these shots from yesterday on the mountain.

Still snowing lightly this morning but the weather man promises me some sun later today. The sunshine should hopefully continue the next few days and with it finally some warmer temps. Not much fresh snow on the radar for a week but the cell from next Sunday is starting to grow and we could see another good dump into early next week. Yesterday the snow just kept coming and big flakes too. I missed the update on what we got on top of Thursday nights 30cm but would have been a bit. Together with the 12cm that fell since the lifts closed yesterday and we have a huge 4 meter base with a nice layer of powder sitting waiting for the lucky ones today on the mountain.

The sun was peaking out early and it is looking like a reasonably clear day ahead. There will be scattered clouds and a chance of some more light snow tonight.

Apart from the light snow forecast tonight it looks like we are finally in for some beautiful sun filled days ahead starting tomorrow. Magic March with a Magic Foot overnight!

30cm of fresh snow overnight on the nose and still falling hard this morning. It is a chilly -7 degrees up top so it is going to be an awesome March Powder day on the slopes. Feels like a while since we had a decent dump so sure all the powder hounds will be howling this morning. Much less people to share it with too compared to say 2 weeks ago.
Last year March was the best month of the season and always my favourite time of year. Good base, some nice dumps and can often get an Onsen to myself :) Not looking like we will get as much snow fall this March, think we got so much the rest of the season the snow gods are taking a break! After so much snow this season to be honest most locals are looking forward to Spring. Bring on the sunshine, sakura and spring slush. Nozawa is serving up another classic winter day with mostly cloudy skies and steady snowfall keeping the slopes in prime condition. After yesterday’s rain made a brief visit to the village—and even parts of the mountain—the temperatures are now dropping fast with -10°C at the top and solid snowfall expected through Friday! It’s shaping up to be another epic stretch for carving up the slopes!

But while we soak in the deep winter magic, it’s also time to start thinking about Nozawa’s stunning green season! The snow may melt, but the adventure doesn’t stop—hiking through lush forests, mountain biking down thrilling trails, and soaking in the peaceful village atmosphere with local festivals and delicious food are just a few ways to enjoy Nozawa in the off-season. If you’re up for some water fun, you can go kayaking and paddleboarding on nearby lakes, or if skiing is still on your mind, hit the dry slopes at Hikage Station and keep those turns going all summer long!

This morning in Nozawa Onsen, we’re waking up to overcast skies with occasional clearings, setting the stage for a mostly cloudy day with light snowfall expected throughout. With midweek in full swing, the slopes are noticeably quieter than the weekend rush—offering more space and freedom for those carving their way down the mountain. Yesterday brought mostly cloudy skies, but fresh snowfall in the afternoon and evening gave the resort a refresh. A 15cm of fresh overnight has topped up the base, and with more snow on the way in the coming days, we’re left wondering—could this be our last big dump of the season? Fresh snow is on the way! Today (Wednesday) starts with light snowfall, which will continue throughout the day. Looking ahead, Thursday and Friday will bring moderate to heavy snow, especially in the evening hours, setting us up for a great weekend on the mountain. Temperatures are staying low, with highs around -6°C to -10°C at higher elevations, ensuring excellent snow conditions. While Saturday looks calmer with cloudy skies and lighter snowfall, Sunday may bring some snow dusting before clearer weather moves in early next week. Another round of light snow is expected by midweek, but temperatures will gradually rise. Make the most of these fresh conditions while they last!

Looking out the window this morning, it’s a much clearer view compared to yesterday! Yesterday’s early afternoon winds have settled, and after a day of heavy to moderate snowfall, the mountain is looking beautifully refreshed. Expect a pleasant day up top with -2°C, slow southern winds, and a chance of clearing skies around midday—perfect conditions for carving up those slopes!
But hold onto your beanies because a big dump is incoming from tomorrow night! NW winds are approaching, bringing another round of deep snow to keep the season going strong. Looking ahead, the long-term forecast is calling for sunnier and slightly warmer days, with plenty of sunshine gracing us next week. Will the second half of March be as magical as last year, when meters of fresh powder arrived so late in the season? We’ll find out soon! Hello March! Fresh Snow Returns to Nozawa ❄️🏔️

Fresh snowflakes are falling from the sky as I write this, and just like that, winter is back in Nozawa! The weatherman is telling us to expect 25cm up top today. After yesterday’s unusual warmth and a touch of rain, the mountain is once again transforming into a white paradise. The fresh snow—just what we needed to refresh those recently compacted runs. With slow northern winds and steady snowfall, it’s shaping up to be a fantastic day on the slopes. The Snow Gods are making sure Nozawa Onsen stays covered in a fresh white blanket as cold temperatures and snowfall return. The 385cm snow base at the top of Nagasaka is on the rise again, giving the mountain a much-needed refresh after a few days of spring-like conditions. Winds will remain light to moderate this week, picking up slightly to 40km/h on Thursday night. Another moderate snowfall is set to arrive Tuesday night, followed by more fresh snow Wednesday through Friday, keeping the slopes in great shape. While the forecast may change, clearer skies and sunshine are expected from Sunday onward. Until then, enjoy winter’s return, make the most of the fresh snow, and stay safe—see you up there!

Yesterday brought us a taste of spring on the slopes, with a mild 2°C at the top and stunning bluebird skies—our warmest day of the season so far! Some were even spotted enjoying the sunshine in T-shirts. The perfect weather set the stage for a magical Lantern Festival, ending with a breathtaking fireworks display over Nagasaka slope. But winter isn’t done with us yet! A bit of rain is expected today in both the village and on the mountain, but by Monday morning, we’ll be waking up to a fresh layer of snow blanketing the resort once again. Looking ahead, the long-term forecast is teasing us with some big snowfall numbers, so expect more powder days ahead—plus a little sunshine to round out next weekend.

Monday (3rd) will bring heavy snowfall, followed by lighter snow showers through Thursday (6th), with moderate to heavy snowfall on Friday (7th). Expect cold temperatures throughout the week, dropping to as low as -24°C at higher elevations. Winds will increase midweek, peaking on Thursday and Friday, potentially impacting lift operations. The weekend (9th-10th) will see clearing skies and milder temperatures, providing great conditions for skiing. We’re kicking off March with perfectly clear skies and warm, springlike weather—an absolute dream for a day on the slopes! Yesterday, we wrapped up February with fantastic conditions up top, and today is just as ideal for exploring the mountain and soaking up the sunshine. 🌞
For the best midday break, Hikage Station is a great spot to grab lunch and relax in the sun. Or, if you’re up for even better views, take a ride up to Buna on Paradise Slope and treat yourself to a soft ice cream while overlooking the mountains! 🍦🏔️

Enjoy the bluebird skies while they last because winter isn’t done yet! ❄️ Starting Sunday night, temperatures will drop, and fresh snow will return, bringing back that magical winter wonderland. 🌨️

After today’s warm and sunny weather, we’re in for a significant shift starting Sunday night (March 3rd) as temperatures drop and heavy snow moves in. Expect consistent snowfall throughout the week, with the heaviest dumps around Monday and Thursday, bringing fresh powder to the slopes. Looking further ahead, more snow is in the forecast for early next week, making for excellent conditions for powder lovers. Get ready for a deep reset and prime skiing and riding conditions!

Still waking up to -4 degrees and a massive 400cm base of snow up at Yamabiko. It has been a big winter and personally really looking forward to Spring and some magnificent Spring skiing. With all that base it is going to be a long season with still 2 months of skiing to go!

Yesterday was a magnificent day up on the slopes. Early cloud cover kept the snow firm and then eventually gave way to sunshine and a beautiful sunset. This morning is sunny from the get go. There may be some scattered cloud but will be another awesome day on the slopes so get up there and enjoy it today as will be a bit busier tomorrow with the weekend crowds.

Clouds hovered over Nozawa Onsen this morning, with sunshine expected to make an appearance throughout the day. Temperatures are on the rise, even at the summit, reaching positive numbers today and hitting 4°C up top tomorrow!
But don’t pack away the winter gear just yet—after this spring-like spell, a fresh snowfall is on the way Sunday night, accompanied by a sharp temperature drop to -7°C on the mountain. More snow is in the forecast toward the end of the week, keeping winter alive in Nozawa a little longer! Winds will remain mild, making for great conditions on the slopes. Got a bit of a nice surprise this morning when opened my window to see some decent size flakes lofting from the sky. The weatherman had promised me sunshine. Dont think the snow will last or make much of a difference but pretty to see all the same.

Another magic day on the slopes yesterday with a mix of cloud and sunshine. Can feel things starting to get a bit quieter around town too and with March just 2 days away and the start of spring really looking forward to the transition.

Surprise snowfall this morning caught many off guard! But for today, expect plenty of sunshine throughout the day with temps on the rise. That said, it’s still freezing up top, so layer up! Looking ahead, we’ve got a light snowfall expected Sunday night, and then the real fun begins—big dumps are on the way from mid-next week! 🌨️❄️

Best day of the season again :)

Depending on what kind of skiing you like we have had multiple amazing days over the whole season really but particularly the last few weeks. I love both snowy days and sunny days but after non stop snow it was pretty amazing to have a full blown sunshine bluebird day. The 16cm of fresh on top of all that snow helped too for perfect conditions across the whole mountain.

Looking out the window this morning and looks like some scattered cloud set to pause the Sunshine run, may even get some light snow up top. Big night last night for the Nozawa Holidays Annual Retro Party at Kongo, great costumes and vibes. Big Arigatou Gozaimasu to all of the team for taking great care of our guests over this amazing season so far. Otsukaresama desu

The snow base remains solid across the resort, thanks to freezing temperatures up the mountain. Today brought a swift shift in weather compared to yesterday’s clear skies, with mostly cloudy conditions and light snow dusting throughout the day. A slight warm-up is expected from Thursday night, pushing temperatures up to 5°C at the summit by Sunday—briefly bringing a touch of t-shirt weather. However, winter will reclaim its grip soon after, with temperatures dropping back to seasonal norms from Monday, hitting -13°C at the top of Yamabiko next week. As cooling northern winds move in, a fresh snowstorm is brewing, set to deliver another round of pristine powder from Tuesday, February 4th. Get ready for some incredible conditions ahead!
