Nozawa Onsen Rich History Throwback Thursday to the Ogama the Cooking Onsen in Nozawa. If you have been to Nozawa no doubt you have walked around this area known as Ogama and soaked in the atmosphere. Now imagine back to the early 1900’s and what it was like then. Still an amazing location and still locals cooking up fresh vegetables in the boiling hot spring waters. Since those days it has been renovated and a fence put around it. Probably a good thing as if you dipped your toe in unknowingly, you could end up with some boiled extremities. Who enjoys walking around this area when you visit Nozawa?

Farming Nozawa Onsen Japan
Farming Nozawa Onsen Japan Farming the fields in Nozawa – Farming Nozawa Onsen Japan Farming is still one of the biggest industries/ pass times in Nozawa over the Green Season. As soon as the snow starts to melt the local farmers get busy planting Rice and all sorts of vegetables. With the rich volcanic soil and abundance of fresh mountain water things grow like crazy. My neighbours are constantly pulling out a wide range of fresh vegetables from the ground and we are often lucky enough to get some direct from the farmer. You can also buy them at Rainbow Supermarket, the morning markets or from many little shops in town and the Michi No Eki stores on the main roads […]
Japan Open Overseas Tourists
Japan Open Overseas Tourists The question is when, not if any more, after 2 years of basically closed borders Japan is getting ready to welcome back all the amazing overseas tourists to its shores. The question remains when and that is a $37 Billion question. Apparently the amount tourists were pumping into the economy before the start of the Corona Pandemic. So you can bet the government and many of the businesses that rely on that income are keen to see the welcome gates flung open again. Note the following thoughts are my own research. Japan Open Overseas Tourists Japan on Friday resumed visa procedures to accept foreign tourists, taking the first step toward increasing inbound tourism after two years […]
May Ski Nozawa Japan
May Ski Nozawa Japan Welcome to Nozawa Golden Week Beautiful start to the holidays today with plenty of sunshine in Nozawa, We even got a few centimetres of snow up top overnight. A good amount of people enjoying the outdoors up on the slopes and around town. Even a bit of a lift line up the top at Yamabiko, have not seen that for a while. All the lifts up top operational with the Skyline connector, Uenotaira and Paradise lifts also rolling today. The snow is naturally slushy and slow on the flats but there are pockets of fun to be enjoyed including the natural half pipes up top. May Ski Nozawa Japan Temps at a respectable 7 degrees above […]
Snow Walls Nozawa Japan
Snow Walls Nozawa Japan How much snow did we get this Season? I took this photo yesterday up at Tateyama home to the amazing Kurobe Alpine Route and those huge snow walls that they tunnel out every Spring in Japan. It just opened less than 1 week ago and this year the walls have measured in at a massive 18 meters high! That’s a whole lot of snow. The area is a Disneyland for skiers, boarders and mountain climbers that don’t mind a bit of hiking to earn your turns. Snow Walls Nozawa Japan Who would like to see these amazing Snow walls? They are just over 2 hours away from Nozawa Onsen. Jump on the site to book your […]
Easter Ski Holiday Japan
Easter Ski Holiday Japan No Aprils Fools in Nozawa Awesome April has begun and kicked off with a gorgeous day on the slopes yesterday. We had 5cm of fresh snow and temps were -5 degrees. With a 3 meter base and the trees doing their frozen broccoli thing it is hard to believe it is Spring time. This morning looking like a bit of a carbon copy but just a light dusting up top. Temps still at -5 Degrees and the sun is shining. Easter Ski Holiday Japan Doesn’t feel as busy as the last few weekends, peoples thoughts shifting to the Cherry Blossom season no doubt. But make no mistake the conditions are still beautiful in Nozawa if can […]
Japan Ski Cherry Blossoms
Japan Ski Cherry Blossoms Bang on 3 meters of base up top to round out March 2022 in Nozawa Will need to look at the record books, but that has to be a bit of a record for base at the end of March in Nozawa. This day last year we had only 185cm up at Yamabiko. At the base this season we have seen over 11 meters of snow fall and imagine is a lot higher number up top. The guys cutting the road at the bottom of Nagasaka Gondola the other day had a bigger job than usual this year. Japan Ski Cherry Blossoms Yesterday was a glorious sunny day on the slopes with plenty of sunshine but […]
Road Trip Nozawa Onsen
Road Trip Nozawa Onsen Nozawa is a small rural village surrounded by mountains. I still remember the very first time I rounded the bend and saw the town for the very first time over 30 years ago. I thought wow this place is something special and I was right. IN a busy ski season we rarely get to leave town as joust no time. Maybe an occasional trip to Iiyama for groceries but even they will deliver. I do like a quick run down to Hirano Cake shop though for the best cakes and pastries this side of Paris. When things start to slow down and the crazy amounts of snow on the road begin to ease it is nice […]
