First Snow Nozawa 2022 The Powder Hounds were out yesterday in Nozawa Looking like a bit of a winter wonderland up top at Yamabiko yesterday with a decent coverage of snow across the slopes. Not enough to get any lifts turning but the main Nagasaka Gondola is open until the end of October so if head up today there should still be enough to make a snowman and throw some snowballs at your friends. Looks like we may get some more snow tonight with temps remaining below 0 degrees up top. Then a southerly change on Monday will see some more Autumn days again. It is a bit rare to get these falls in mid October so let’s hope it […]

Travel Australia Japan Ski
Travel Australia Japan Ski Keen to get back on the Slopes? You are not the only one! This shot from Nozawa I am guessing in the 60’s. It was a popular place even back then and there were a lot less slopes to choose from than there are now. So the skiers were more concentrated. When I first started to ski in Nozawa 30 years ago we didn’t even have the Yamabiko area so it was a big thing when the resort opened that up and put in the Nagasaka Gondola. Some promising news for our friends in Australia coming out the last few days too and looks like they could be able to Travel Internationally again by November. Of […]

Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival
The Fire Festival is one of the three most famous fire festivals in Japan. It is held on January 15th every year to pray for a plentiful harvest, health and good fortune in the coming year. The festival dates back to 1863, and though the location has changed, the festivities remain the same. During this festival the twenty-five and forty-two year old men from the village play a very important role. An old belief in Japan dictates that, for men, these years are unlucky ages. The twenty-five and the forty-two year old men in their unlucky ages construct the shaden (shrine) from beech wood that reaches a height of 18 meters. Every year it takes 100 villagers to build […]
